Good to know
Plain black coffee contains few FODMAPs, yet many people with IBS notice it. Caffeine stimulates the colon, which can mean urgency, especially in IBS-D. That is why coffee sits in the moderate group in our database.
What goes in the cup matters too: regular milk adds lactose, and honey or sugar-free syrups add FODMAPs. Decaf with lactose-free milk is a common easy swap. Read more in our guide to coffee and IBS.
Coffee on a low FODMAP diet
- Small amounts of coffee are usually fine during elimination, but larger servings move into high FODMAP territory.
- Avoid pairing it with other moderate or high FODMAP foods in the same meal, which is where stacking matters most.
- If it bothers you, note it in a food diary and test it again during reintroduction.
