Good to know

Apples are high FODMAP because they contain both excess fructose and sorbitol. That double load is why apples, apple juice and apple sauce cause trouble for so many people with IBS.

Apple juice concentrate is also a common hidden sweetener in snacks, baby foods and "no added sugar" products. Kiwi, oranges, blueberries and pineapple are low FODMAP fruit swaps.

Apples on a low FODMAP diet

  • Leave apples out during the elimination phase, which usually lasts two to six weeks.
  • Use one of the lower-FODMAP swaps below instead.
  • High FODMAP doesn't mean forever: during reintroduction, many people find they tolerate some high FODMAP foods in smaller amounts.

Which FODMAPs are in apples

Fructose: Excess fructose means the food has more fructose than glucose. That extra fructose is absorbed less efficiently and can draw water into the bowel. Read more about fructose malabsorption.

Sorbitol: Sorbitol is a polyol (sugar alcohol) found in some fruits and in "sugar-free" products. It is poorly absorbed and has an osmotic, water-drawing effect. Read more about polyols and foods that cause bloating.

Can I have apples during the low FODMAP elimination phase?

It's usually best left out during elimination and tested later, during reintroduction.

What can I use instead of apples?

Lower-FODMAP options include oranges, kiwi, pineapple and blueberries.

How do I test apples during reintroduction?

Apples belong with the excess fructose group, which is often tested with honey or mango. Test one group at a time, starting small and increasing over a few days, and note how you feel.
